Round 3 15/6/14 Scunthorpe Speedway

DTRA National Dirt Track Championships Round Three Scunthorpe Speedway

The Eddie Wright Stadium at Scunthorpe provided an excellent location for round 3 of the DTRA National Championships on Sunday 15th June. The track had been heavily watered to reduce dust and provided a consistently yet loose and slippery surface that lead to some close racing but did not lend itself to passing manoeuvres.

During the heats it was the Kawasaki of young Oliver Brindley that looked to be dominating the pro class with two wins out of three whilst the Neave twins and current number one Aiden Collins were also in the mix.  The pro final followed a pattern that has become the norm in 2014 with Aiden Collins hitting the front on the exit from turn one. Aiden was followed by Tim Neave and Oliver Brindley. As the riders settled into the 12 lap final Tom Neave was looking to be the fastest rider on the race track and managed a pass on Brindley and started to put his brother Tim under serious pressure. Both Tim and Tom were close to Aiden and a slip up on the tricky track by any of the riders would have left the win wide open.

After round two the number one spot in the restricted class was tied between Les Wood and Ross Herrod.  Herrod didn’t really settle into the super slick track and finished down the order in the restricted class.  It was Les wood who made it count in the final.  Justin Heavens earned his first restricted podium with a strong second place followed home by Gary Inman who has been struggling to translate a number of heat wins in 2014 into results in a final.

The Rookie class was dominated by Mike Johnson on his home built thunderbike. Randal Thomas took a second podium this year with a great second place ahead of Death Spray Custom team rider David Gwyther.

Dave Chadburn lead home an action packed thunderbike final. The first four riders were very close throughout with Guy Sutherland pushing for the lead and Anthony Brown pushing Geoff Cain for a spot on the podium.

Pro rider Darren Trapmore put his skills to good use with another win in the minibike class, ahead of Robert Neave and a second podium of the day for Justin Heavens.

The vintage Class saw Peter Jordon take a win ahead of Paul Harrison and John Boddy on the Triumph.

The largest entry so far this season saw a total of 9 youth riders compete in two classes. Skye Adams took top spot in the inter class ahead of Ben Neave. George Hopper took top spot in the junior class ahead of Leon Collier.

The youth and minibike classes will meet again in two weeks at Scunthorpe with all the other classes moving  to the Norfolk Area on Friday and Saturday 18 – 19th July for Dirtquake.
