Round 2 18/5/14 Coventry Speedway

DTRA National Dirt Track Championships Round Two Coventry Speedway
Round two of the DTRA 2014 championships saw a record entry for a UK dirt track race. Over seventy riders across eight classes lined up at the excellent oval racing facility in the heart of the UK. Sun cream and ice creams were the order of the day for riders and spectators alike.
Aiden Collins was again under pressure from the rest of the pro grid under hot and dusty conditions. It was a constant battle with the sun to keep moisture on the track. The heats provided some excellent racing and the final looked to be open to a number of riders. It was however Collins who made it count in the main event with a clear win over brothers Tom and Tim Neave. Tom was able to put Collins under some pressure during the mid-section of the final but was not able to pass Collins. Tim Neave managed to hold a great 3rd place ahead of the team Kawasaki riders Alan Birtwistle and Oliver Brindley. Making a guest appearance at Coventry was rider number 7 Freddie Sheene. Sheene had some great heat results but failed to make a big impression in the final.
The hot dry conditions took their toll on riders in all the classes, but some excellent riding prevailed. Newcomer Les Wood managed a great win the in the restricted class ahead of DSC team rider Ross Herrod and Tom Clements.
French rider Christophe Decombard took the rookie class by storm with a convincing win in his final from Mike Johnson and Randal Thomas on his underpowered Honda FT230.
The thunderbike class saw some key riders retire early due to crashes but it was ever consistent Dave Chadburn who took the top spot on the podium. It looked like Co-Built rider Guy Sutherland was settled in for second place but a silly mistake entering turn 1 cost him his podium position. Chadburn was followed home by Paul Balleta and Co-Built rider Geoff Cain.
Cain also managed a podium spot in the vintage class, but it was another French rider Frank Chatokhine who took the top spot again ahead of local rider Paul Harrison. So far this season Chatokhine seems unstoppable in the vintage class.
Darren Trapmore took the top honours in the minibike class ahead of minibike regulars Robert Neave and Adam Waller.
The youth classes provided some excellent racing as always. It was Leon Collier who took the junior class, with the Tovey family close behind. Stephanie Tovey beat her brother Thomas for second and 3rd place respectively. Championship leader George Hopper had to withdraw due to a fall in the heats. Youth inters was taken by Jordon Lee miller ahead of Ben Neave and Skye Adams.
